Mission and Aims - Melbourne Press Club

The purposes of the Melbourne Press Club are defined in the Statement of Purposes attached to the Rules in the club's legal incorporation documents.

The purposes are:

  • To improve the standards and quality of written works in the community generally and for mass communication particularly, including works for the press, radio, television and other media;
  • To promote the exchange of information between the media and other sections of the community;
  • To promote the exchange of information between members and encourage excellence in professional and personal contributions by members for written and other media;
  • To sponsor informative addresses by speakers drawn from leaders in the community, knowledge of whose experience and views would contribute to achievement of excellence in the community;
  • To sponsor events, annually or otherwise, to judge works published in the media and to make awards for excellence;
  • To do all such other things as are conducive or incidental to the attainment of the above objects or any of them.

More recently, the MPC has adopted a mission statement:

The Melbourne Press Club provides a forum for media professionals to celebrate the quality of Victorian journalism, works to advance professional standards, provides support and fraternity for members and arranges forums for discussion of important public issues.

The MPC has also adopted a goal for its Business Plan in the year ahead:

To cement the Melbourne Press Club as the premier non-union organisation for the full spectrum of the journalistic community in Melbourne, with growing membership, financial stability, a growing range of services for members and a higher profile to enhance the image of the profession.
