About Us - Melbourne Press Club

The Melbourne Press Club (MPC) is an incorporated, non-profit association of journalists and related professionals in one of the world's most robust mass media communities. Melbourne is served by two daily newspapers, two national newspapers, three commercial television networks, the ABC national radio/television broadcaster and strong commercial radio outlets. Melbourne is also served by the national multilingual broadcaster SBS and Australian Associated Press.

The MPC celebrates the best of journalism in the State of Victoria by presenting the annual Quill Awards for Excellence in Victorian journalism. It also co-hosts the annual Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award, which commemorates one of Australia's greatest newspaper editors. The club also presents the annual Grant Hattam Award, in honor of the leading media lawyer who died suddenly in 1998. This Quill Award is for the best investigative journalism of the year, in all media. Another feature of Quills night is the Young Journalist of the Year Award. The winner receives fares and accommodation to attend the annual Investigative Reporters and Editors conference in the United States.

The MPC holds regular lunches for members with high-profile political leaders, business leaders and others relevant to significant public issues. The MPC provides fraternity for members through social events and other meetings.

Through this web site, the MPC helps journalists connect with each other and journalists around the world on mutual issues such as professional development and media freedom.

Eligible members must be engaged professionally in media communications and/or have a genuine interest in the affairs of the MPC and must not exploit their membership for personal gain, or that of their employer or principal.

There is an annual membership fee of $60 (incl. GST), or $22 (incl. GST) for students. The MPC is governed by an elected committee that meets each month. The MPC is a non-profit organisation funded by member subscriptions and sponsorship income.
